Broadband
RABMN - A low speed VSAT network was set up in 1991
for establishing connectivity to remote areas. This service was offering Data
speeds of 1.2 and 9.6 kbps using X.28 and X.25 Technology
Inet – Terrestrial packet switching with 103 nodes was established
progressively from 1991 onwards. This Network was offering X.28, X.25 and Frame
Relay Services. With the growing popularity of Internet , this Technology has
become obsolete and the same has been closed in 2008.
Internet Services -
Internet Services were offered from 1996 on both dialup and leased access. The
Services were initially made available through National Internet Backbone – 1
comprising of Type A nodes and Type B Nodes at 45 locations and over 400 Type C
nodes spread across the country.
To enhance the customer experience
for providing high speed access, National Internet Backbone – 2 project was
planned which has 4 Projects as given below.

Project 1 – This
project was established using MPLS technology
to provide Transport Network for all the Data Services initially in 10 cities
in 2003. The network was further augmented to a total of 106 nodes in 2005.
This Network is presently used for supporting MPLS VPN,
Project 2.1 – Narrow
band RAS were installed in 71 cities across the country for providing dialup
services. The Network is used for supporting dialup internet ( Netone) , Dialup VPN access Network.
Project 2.2 – Using
the MPLS Core Network, Broadband Services was launched in 2005. This Network
provided Broadband Services ranging from 256 Kbps to 8 Mbps. The capacity of
Broadband network was expanded under Multiplay
Network. To provide Broadband Services to rural Areas , rural Broadband network
is also installed. The capacity of 7.8 million has been commissioned under
these 2 expansion projects.
Project 3 – Operation
Support System / Business Support System – To support provisioning and
billing of all data services,
The
Project3 System is equipped to support 5 million customers.
This platform is predominantly being
used for the Broadband Services. At Present it is catering to about 3.5 million
Broadband Customers
